For more than 12 years we have been helping people who come to Zagreb for treatment from all parts of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond. Assistance is reflected in the provision of accommodation, food, transportation, hygiene supplies, administrative assistance, assistance in continuing education for sick children and assistance in continuing treatment abroad. We help every man, regardless of gender, age, type of disease, social status, creed and nationality. In addition to sick people, we also help other vulnerable groups of society such as children with disabilities, homeless people, people with disabilities, the elderly and infirm, defenders and war victims. All the help and support we provide is completely free for all users.
From inception to today, we have helped more than 11,400 people and through our work we have gathered more than 200,000 people from all over the world, as donors, members or volunteers. For our work we have been awarded numerous awards and recognitions and we highlight the award “European citizen”granted to us by the European Parliament, a special recognition “Didak” that she has given us Franciscan Province of Herzegovina, the prize Vecernjakov's seal which he assigns Večernji list, the prize Face of Goodness which he assigns Morning sheet you prize Pride of Croatia assigned by the sheet 24 hours.
Until recently, we operated in 8 residential capacities where we could accommodate up to 18 families or up to 67 people at the same time. We also had facilities adapted to people with disabilities and people who need strict isolation. We have two vehicles for the transport of people with disabilities. We are licensed social service providers and registered in the Register of legal entities and craftsmen providing social services. All of the above makes us leading organization in the provision of social services to seriously ill people in the Republic of Croatia. The apartments and houses available for free accommodation of seriously ill persons and their family members or other accompanying persons were used by the Association on the basis of a lease agreement and with the help of donors it covered the high costs of rent and adaptation of the premises to the needs of the sick persons. Unfortunately, due to the expiration of the lease agreement and the current state of the real estate market, inflation and the introduction of the Euro, we were forced to leave 7 out of 8 accommodation capacities by 30.06.2023
Property owners are reluctant to sign long-term lease agreements due to inflation and daily price increases. The properties we have used so far have been forced to leave, and we are unable to rent new properties for the same reasons. The only solution that is imposed is the own capacities of the Humanitarian Association Fra Mladen Hrkac, in which it could carry out and plan the activities of accommodation of people undergoing treatment far from home without fear of the expiration of the lease agreement and the impossibility of adapting certain residential premises to the needs of users who are persons with disabilities.
By researching the real estate market, we found a suitable property, 750 m2, not far from the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb. The structure of the property itself, location, large yard, transport connections, quiet part of the city in the immediate vicinity of Maksimir Forest, perfectly suit the needs of our users and this property seems to us an ideal solution for our users. In the listed property we plan to provide accommodation for 13 families at the same time or for to 49 persons which would bring us security and smooth operation in the future. The price of this property was 400,000 euros. With our own funds, we secured the amount of 280,000 euros while the remaining amount needed to buy the property in the amount of 120,000 euros was collected through donations.
But in order to adapt the house and the garden to the needs of our users, we now have an extremely important step ahead of us — adaptation of premises. The works include interior renovations, adapting rooms to accommodate families, equipping common areas and providing a warm, safe environment for anyone forced to undergo treatment away from their home.
We really need your help.
Please help us to continue to provide assistance to people coming for treatment in Zagreb.
Thank you all, on behalf of all the beneficiaries of the aid of the Humanitarian Association Fra Mladen Hrkac.
