They arrive in Zagreb weary and anxious — seeking hope We want to offer them what matters most: a safe place where they can breathe, rest, and feel supported during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
For 14 years, we have opened our doors to those who have nowhere else to turn. Every bed, every meal, and every word of support exists thanks to people like you.
Together, we have helped more than fourteen thousand individuals — thousands of names, stories, and moments when someone felt relief because they were not left alone. Now, we want to take the final step — to create a lasting Home away from home.
Imagine having to leave your home because of medical treatment. The city where you grew up. Your work. Your school. Your family. The security of everyday life.
This is how families arrive in Zagreb from across Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other countries — weary, frightened, and facing deep uncertainty.
They come for treatment, carrying fears that do not fade and questions no one can answer with certainty. In that moment, they need support. They need a place where they can breathe. A bed where they can sleep through the night without added worry. A warm meal after a long day of examinations. A word of encouragement when their strength begins to falter.
When illness changes an address, someone must offer the feeling of home. That is where our mission begins — and where your opportunity to be part of it begins as well.

Every open door, every prepared meal, every light switched on in a room exists because of people like you — people who have supported us selflessly since the very beginning of our work.
Together, we have supported more than fourteen thousand individuals. These are not just numbers — they are thousands of names, thousands of stories, and thousands of moments when someone felt relief because they were not alone.
Together, we have provided hundreds of thousands of meals and tens of thousands of overnight stays. That means a parent could remain beside their child in hospital instead of worrying about where they would sleep.
We have offered thousands of hours of conversation, psychological care, and counselling — because sometimes it is simply a conversation that restores strength. Everything we have achieved, we have achieved together. And every future story of support begins with the same trust.
The Fra Mladen Hrkać Home — A Home Away from Home For years, we accommodated families in rented houses and apartments. We invested in spaces that were not our own, knowing they could be taken away within a month.
Each terminated contract brought new uncertainty — for us, and for families already living through the most difficult period of their lives.
Our wish is for security to depend on us, not on someone else’s decision.
That is why, thanks to our donors and responsible stewardship, we purchased two houses with a total area of 750 m², located in the immediate vicinity of the University Hospital Centre Zagreb, with a value of €500,000.
In these homes, we will be able to accommodate ten families at the same time — up to thirty individuals — and, for the first time, say to them: you can stay here for as long as the treatment lasts. Without fear of relocation. Without additional burden. This is the foundation of the Fra Mladen Hrkać Home — a true home away from home.
The houses now need to be adapted to the needs of people facing serious illness.
Renovation is required. Rooms must be furnished. Shared spaces arranged. Accessibility ensured for people with disabilities and for those who require isolation. We must create a space that is not only functional, but warm and dignified.
Without this, the Home cannot open its doors. And so we turn to you once again.
Not because we have not done enough — but because we have already done so much together, and we know we can complete this story.

It means that after a day spent beside a hospital bed, a family member will have a place to rest their head. It means that someone undergoing exhausting treatments will not have to worry about accommodation costs. It means that a family, far from their own home, will feel safety and dignity.
